Bystanders lifted a crashed car to free a trapped girl when a driving lesson went wrong in a full Whangamata supermarket carpark today.

Te Awamutu police say the learner driver had been in the New World carpark receiving a lesson from her mother when she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

It sent the car hurtling toward four young girls on their scooters on a nearby footpath.

A supermarket employee says the carpark was almost full, with the business experiencing one of its busiest weeks.

In a Facebook post, police say the car mounted the footpath, taking one of the girls with her.

Members of the public then lifted the car to free the girl, who was left underneath the vehicle.

The girl was taken to Thames Hospital but was later discharged.
