A popular Hamilton restaurant has been gutted by fire.

Fire crews from across Waikato fought the blaze at Domaine Eatery, on Victoria St, in the early hours of this morning, Waikato assistant fire area commander Darryl Papesch says.

They responded to a report of an alarm sounding and smoke coming from the building.

When they arrived the fire was venting through the roof and was fully involved, Mr Papesch says.

Thirteen fire trucks and 60 firefighters from Hamilton, Cambridge and Ngaruawahia were at the scene at the height of the blaze.

"The restaurant is completely gutted but it was contained to the restaurant so the buildings either side are fine," he said.

Fire investigators will at the scene today to try to establish the cause.

No one was injured.

Residents in an upstairs flat at the rear of the restaurant got themselves out.

The restaurant's owner and head chef is Jeff Dunstan. He's from Hamilton and has worked in Auckland, and Vanuatu at luxury resorts.

One reviewer on TripAdvisor said the restaurant had potential to stand out as an eating jewel in Hamilton.
