Six rescued in Whakatane after waka capsizes

Six people have been rescued after a waka capsized crossing the bar at the entrance to the Whakatane River.

They were rescued shortly after 6am today, a spokeswoman for Whakatane Coastguard said.

The vessel flipped in rough sea conditions and other boats helped with the rescue with the six aboard the double-hulled waka jumping into the sea.

On Monday, 60 needed rescuing about 1km off the Whakatane coast when a White Island tour vessel caught fire.
