Petrol station Z's Mexican vegan pie has proved surprisingly popular this summer, with thousands of pies sold within the first five days of its launch.
The pie arose from a DIY pie competition the petrol station ran in July, with one Auckland contestant coming out on top with her Mexican vegan pie design.
Z has said "in a country of steak and cheese munchers, we were a bit surprised with this result".
The vegan pie has come in third, behind the classic kiwi steak and cheese and mince and cheese flavours.
The station says a number of sites have sold out, forcing more to be made to keep holiday motorists happy.
Of the 3500 entries submitted to the pie competition, four of the five most popular were vegan pies, with the vegan community "coming out in force".
The Mexican vegan pie will be stocked by most Z sites from December 28 to January 28.
