A Christchurch woman has died after she was swept away while trying to cross a river in the Deception Valley on the West Coast.
The 32-year-old was with four other trampers crossing the Deception River on Sunday when she was swept downstream.
Members of her party found her around one kilometre away, activating their emergency beacon and performing CPR but they were unable to revive her.
A rescue helicopter and emergency service staff were dispatched to her position but she was dead upon their arrival.
The woman's body has been flown to Greymouth.
It's the second fatal incident on the West Coast on Sunday after a 54-year-old Canterbury man fell to his death while tramping on Mawson Glacier.
