School starts this week so expect heavy traffic and some new faces in class.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says for more than 10,000 five-year-olds, it will be their first week of school.
During the course of the year about another 52,000 children will start school as they turn five.
Almost all of them will have the advantage of having attended early childhood education, which gives them a great head start, she says.
The school year is beginning for 750,000 students in total.
New Zealand's curriculum is taught in over 2500 schools by more than 52,000 teachers.
Road users are being urged to allow for longer journey times due to the extra traffic.
