A pristine, privately-owned beach will become part of the Abel Tasman National Park if an online campaign to buy it succeeds.
The Givealittle campaign has so far raised more than $800,000 to buy the seven hectare Awaroa Inlet beach.
It's listed for sale at $2 million - less than 50 cents per person if everyone in New Zealand chipped in.
"This campaign has struck a deep vein of public support, with more than 11,000 backers so far," said Conservation Minister Maggie Barry.
"I'm able to give an assurance that if it succeeds the land will be added to Abel Tasman National Park and free access secured for the public in perpetuity."
Ms Barry said she had told her department's officials to talk to the campaigners about the legal details of making the beach part of the national park.
