Double-fatality in north Canterbury crash

A second person has died after a truck and car collided on State Highway 1 in north Canterbury this afternoon.

The incident happened around 1:30pm today, and has blocked the road in the Hundalee area in Hurunui District, 5km north of the Conway River.

The male and female occupants of the car involved both died at the scene. The truck driver was not injured.

Police are currently contacting the family members.

"Our thoughts go out to all the families involved and we thank the people that stopped and assisted at the scene," Senior Sergeant Vaughan Lapslie says.

Motorist are advised to take the Kaikoura Inland route to avoid delays. Police say they are working to get the road open as soon as possible but it's estimated it will take another two hours.

Police have set up check points at the Waipara, Leader and Inland Rd to advise motorists of the road closure and to make use of rest areas until the road reopens. Trucks are also being told to not take the back route.

The Serious Crash Unit is currently investigating the cause of the crash.
