A massive fire has ripped through a house in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn.

The Fire Service was called to the incident just before 1am.

They say the 150-square-metre home on Farrar St has been gutted by the blaze.

One fire fighter has been taken to hospital after he fell through some stairs but the people who live at the house escaped injury.

A Fire Service spokesman says there were fears a person was still inside the home during the blaze, but the whole family was eventually accounted for.

He said fire teams had arrived within minutes of a 12:45am callout, keeping the flames from spreading to nearby homes.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated, he said.

Teams were still at the home this morning dampening it down.
