Multisport legend Steve Gurney reckons he's won the "dick of the day" award during this week's Pioneer mountain bike race in the South island.

Riders are traversing all sorts of terrain from Christchurch to Queenstown. During one of the stages Gurney - a nine time Coast to Coast champion - fell over at an aid station and punctured his arm.

He was taken by medics for treatment and was writhing in pain.

Later he saw the irony that he wasn't actually injured during the 500 plus kilometre race itself - saying "there's no adventure without blood" and that he would get a lot of grief from his fellow competitors and mates.

The seven day race finishes in Queenstown tomorrow - it's been a long hard slog for the 300 or so riders.

At least Gurney's got a better work story.
