Man dropped at hospital by gang members dies

A homicide investigation has been launched after the death of a man who was dropped off at hospital by two Tribesman motorcycle gang members at the weekend.

The 24-year-old Otara man was taken to Middlemore Hospital with serious head injuries at around 1pm on Sunday.

He died in hospital late yesterday and a post-mortem examination was scheduled for today, police say.

The gang members, who are known to police, used a silver Honda Odyssey during the drop-off with the registration number DBK440. Their connection to the Tribesman gang has been confirmed through looking at CCTV footage provided by the hospital.

The victim is connected to the gang as well, but police wouldn't confirm if he was a member -- only that he was "associated" with them.

Detective Inspector Faa Va'aelua says the man's family had been sitting at his bedside prior to his death, and they are now working with Victim Support.

Information about how the victim was injured, where the assault took place or who was involved is still being investigated.

Det Insp Va'aelua says police are working with "a mountain of inquiries", with 15 detectives working on the case.

Police are seeking information from anybody who saw the Honda Odyssey over the weekend of February 20-21, or have seen it since then.

Witnesses are urged to contact the Operation Mustard investigation team on (09) 261 1300, or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Tribesman motorcycle gang originates out of Otara, south Auckland. According to police, they are known for criminal activity which includes violence and theft. They are usually associated with the colours black and yellow, and have a patch on the back of their jackets.

The man will not be named until all of the next-of-kin has been notified.
