A man's leg has been impaled by a marlin fish after he tried to get it into a fishing boat at Waihau Bay in the Bay of Plenty.

The 55-year-old fisherman and two others caught the marlin and managed to get in the boat, but not without one man suffering the blow from the marlin's spike to his lower leg.

The boat took about one and half hours to get back to Waihau Bay where emergency services were waiting.

He was stabilised at the Waihau fire station by St John paramedics before being flown to Whakatane Hospital where is now.

St John says he's in moderate condition.

Todd Dunham from the Trustpower Rescue Helicopter says the man was "quite jovial considering the pain".
