Police have named Rod Anderson as the man who died after jumping off an Auckland wharf in an attempt to save another man.

The 47-year-old project manager for a shop fit-out company died in the water at Beach Haven wharf on Monday night.

It is understood Mr Anderson jumped into the water fully clothed in an attempt to save a friend in trouble.

The friend was able to grab a boat's anchor rope to stay afloat, but Mr Anderson disappeared and his body was found yesterday morning.

His death has been referred to the coroner.
