Organisers of the Auckland Pride Parade are promising a spectacle watched by thousands of people.
The parade on Ponsonby Road from 6pm today is the highlight of the Auckland Pride Festival.
This year the theme is stories, myths and legends and the parade goes from north to south.
Organisers say 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the Homosexual Law Reform Act in New Zealand, a significant milestone for the rainbow community, and this will be remembered by participants.
Off-duty police staff marched in the parade in uniform for the first time last year and they will be doing so again this year.
Police said at the time staff were allowed to march in uniform with the understanding they were off duty and acted with professionalism.
About 80 off-duty police officers are expected to march in the parade this year.
Organisers are promising the liveliest, most colourful, uplifting and empowering spectacle of the festival.
The weather forecast is good.
