Trial date set for accused kidnapper

The man accused of abducting a teenager from near Auckland in the middle of last year then allegedly leading police on a high speed chase through the Bay of Plenty is to stand trial in June.

Dean Wayne Whakatau, 36, is charged with abduction, three counts of unlawful sexual connection and a number of burglary offences.

His trial date of June 20 was confirmed in the Rotorua District Court today.

Whakatau is to remain in custody until his trial which will be before a judge alone not a jury.
