One man's junk is a police diver's treasure.
Members of the police national dive squad have discovered nine car bodies, assorted vehicle parts and a small boat while on a training exercise in Waikato River.
The three-day operation around Hamilton gave the dive squad a chance to practice skills and remove the wrecks from the waterway.
"It's great to see some significant rubbish and potential navigation safety problems removed from the river," said Waikato Regional Council's maritime services team leader Richard Barnett.
The divers also carried out visual checks of the city council's underwater intake structures at the water treatment plant.
