A woman has been found dead at a property north of Dunedin and a man's been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a firearms incident.

Police are investigating three separate scenes following this mornings incident when a 59-year-old man was taken to Dunedin hospital in a "very serious condition" by rescue helicopter, a St Johns spokesperson says.

He remains in critical condition.

Emergency services were called to a Russell Rd property in Seacliff just after 8am. Police say there was a firearm involved. 

A 53-year-old local woman was found dead at a house in the area.

Police have located a firearm in the Truby King Reserve related to the incident. They are continuing to investigate including the how the man and woman are linked.

They have assured the community it is an isolated event and residents should not feel concerned for their safety.

A cordon is still in place while staff remain in area to continue a scene examination.
