A Bay of Plenty church has gone up in flames and a person treated for smoke inhalation.
Seven fire crews were called to battle the blaze at the Anglican church in Mamaku, near Rotorua just after 1am on Tuesday.
The building was well alight when they arrived and they spent more than three hours at the scene.
A person was treated for smoke inhalation.
It was not clear what they were doing at the scene and may have been trying to do something to battle the fire, Fire Service northern communications shift manage Colin Underwood says.
Fire investigators will try to determine the cause of the blaze on Tuesday morning.
The fire was thought to be suspicious, the Rotorua Daily Post reported.
The church had been deconsecrated and a 63-year-old World War II commemorative stained glass window moved to another church in nearby Ngongotaha.
