Fire crews have managed to contain a large blaze just north of Auckland.

Three hectares of scrub and pine were burnt in the fire, which sparked at Tawharanui around 2.30 this afternoon.

A helicopter and nine fire trucks were at the scene at the height of the blaze, which was threatening a nearby gum forest.

It's understood it spread after the wind turned on a controlled burn.
