The man charged following the death of a woman hit by a car in Wellington will keep his name secret until next month.

The 58-year-old from Levin appeared via video link in Wellington District Court today, where Judge Ian Mill continued his interim name suppression.

He has been charged with assault with a blunt weapon and excess breath alcohol. Police have said they aren't ruling out further charges but none were laid today.

The judge refused media applications to film or photograph the man as the police prosecutor said the investigation was ongoing and identification may be an issue.

Delia Grace Williams, 55, died when she was hit by a car in the Wellington suburb of Northland on last Tuesday evening, prompting police to open a homicide investigation into her death.

The man was arrested on Wednesday. He has been remanded in custody until April 26 and will undergo a health assessment.
