The 58-year-old from Levin appeared via video link in Wellington District Court today, where Judge Ian Mill continued his interim name suppression.
He has been charged with assault with a blunt weapon and excess breath alcohol. Police have said they aren't ruling out further charges but none were laid today.
The judge refused media applications to film or photograph the man as the police prosecutor said the investigation was ongoing and identification may be an issue.
