Police are now investigating a homicide in Wellington after an elderly man died in hospital overnight following a serious attack.

The man died from injuries received during a serious attack around 9:50am yesterday at a home on Mahora St in Kilbirnie.

Police arrested a man shortly afterward in relation to the assault and have now charged the 49-year-old with murder. He will appear in the Wellington District Court today.

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee says while an arrest has been made, police are still talking to a number of people and making inquiries in relation to the incident.

Police are providing the victim's family and friends with support following the death.
