Four people have escaped with just minor injuries after a freight train hit their car in the South Island.
Emergency services were called to a rail crossing on State Highway 1 in Omihi, north-east of Waipara, at about 12:30pm today.
A Kiwirail spokesman said the northbound train on the main line had hit the car but the cause was still unclear as the lights and alarms at the crossing were working fine.
Four people in the car were treated for minor injuries at the scene but were not taken to hospital, a St John ambulance spokesman said.
Police said they were still at the scene investigating the cause.
