Kawerau murder-accused remanded in custody

A teenager has been remanded in custody after appearing in a Whakatane court for the murder of a Bay of Plenty man.

The 18-year-old man was arrested last Thursday following the suspicious death of Todd Branch, 23, in Kawerau the day before.

A port-mortem has been completed and no one else is being sought in relation to the homicide.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Standen says police have scaled back their operation as the final local interviews are conducted.

"I would also like to thank the Kawerau community for their assistance with this tragic and avoidable death and reassure the local people that this was not a gang or drug related case but more a matter that the two people involved knew each other and things then turned for the worse," he said.

The teenager has appeared in Whakatane District Court and has been remanded into custody until his next appearance on March 23.
