A man washed off rocks while fishing north of Raglan has been rescued by a boatie.
Emergency services were alerted by a member of the public who saw the man swept away shortly before 2pm on Saturday, Waikato District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Peter van de Wetering says.
The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard were sent but the member of the public, who was on land, had managed to attract the attention of a boatie who rescued the man.
The rescued man, in his early 40s, was being assessed by medics.
"It's a west coast beach and it has an element of risk," Sen Sgt van de Wetering said.
"For those who fish in the area and know it well it's safe provided appropriate precautions are taken but it's an area where you can get rogue waves and lives have been taken."
