If there's a river near where you live, is it actually safe to swim in?
Chances are it isn't and that's the terrible state of most of the rivers in New Zealand. You would not have believed 20 years ago our rivers could be too polluted to swim in, but that's the reality.
Some are severely polluted like the Manawatu and after decades of being used as a gutter for wastewater and farm run-off, the river has been called one of the worst in the Western world.
Tomorrow night, Environment Minster Nick Smith will announce stage two of the big clean up there.
