Wellington police are concerned some drivers in the Kapiti region are putting themselves and other road users at risk in an effort to avoid roadworks.

Wellington District Road Policing Manager Inspector Mike Wright says motorists travelling near McKay's Crossing south of Paraparaumu are taking a detour along Emerald Glenn Rd to get ahead of the traffic.

"In the space of an hour last weekend, seven motorists attempting to avoid the road works along the Raumati Straits had their driver licences suspended," says Insp Wright.

He says one of the vehicles was travelling more than 60 km/h above the 50 km/h speed limit.

Insp Wright says similar behaviour has also been reported on the Paekakariki Hill Rd and police will enforce speed and safety rules while the roadworks are in place.
