A baby born in Auckland has had his first taste of the city's traffic, saying hello to the world on the side of the motorway.
The baby boy was born on State Highway 1 near the Market Rd overpass in Epsom, about 9:45am this morning.
The mother's car had pulled over to the left-hand shoulder a few minutes earlier, New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) spokeswoman Sarah Azam says.
Officials closed the left hand lane of the motorway so ambulance staff could deal with the situation in a little more safety, she said.
They were later taken to hospital.
"We understand mum and baby are doing well," Ms Azam said.
The lane was closed for about 10 minutes while the baby was delivered. It was outside the rush hour so traffic was not as heavy as it could have been, she said.
"NZTA is grateful to people's patience if they were caught in any delays as a result of that."
