Man sentenced for killing cat with poison

A Lower Hutt man found guilty of poisoning his neighbour's cat has been ordered to pay reparation of $1775.

67-year-old Dennis Wong poisoned 'Sonny' the cat by tempting him to eat mince laced with anti-freeze poison at his Avalon home after it pooed on his lawn.

The seal point Birman suffered kidney failure and had to be euthanised.

Wong denied the charge of wilfully ill-treating the animal, but was found guilty last year.

At his sentencing his, lawyer Lynda Stevens said he accepted he had been found guilty and posed no risk of reoffending.

The judge agreed and ordered Wong to pay reparation to the complainant, and a further $1395 to cover witness expenses at his judge-only trial.
