A fire has broken out on in a storage room on the upper floor of a corner shop in the south Auckland suburb of Manukau.

The blaze at the store, which is part of a shopping complex on Lambie Dr, set off two alarms, and four fire engines are at the scene attempting to extinguish it.

Senior station officer Len Opai is at the scene, and says putting the fire out is proving to be "a little difficult".

"The room is quite small and access is difficult through a single stair," officer Opai said.

"We're helping out the situation with an aerial appliance working on the roof and removing the roofing iron from the top, so we can allow for ventilation and improve conditions for the firefighters still in the room."

Officer Opai says it could be a long time before the fire is extinguished, with several crews expected to rotate until it is completely put out.
