A blaze at a Whanganui home has claimed the life of the elderly woman who lived in it, according to the Fire Service.
Fire crews were called to the Heads Rd house in Gonville around 9:30pm -- with the woman, in her 70s, removed from her home with the help of neighbours about 13 minutes later.
She was brought outside where firefighters performed CPR on her, before she was taken to Whanganui Hospital by police.
The woman was in a critical condition, but it has since been revealed that she died from her injuries today.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
