Police are negotiating with an alleged gunman believed to have shot and killed a police dog and who is holed up in a house in Porirua after a day-long manhunt.

They earlier issued a plea to him through the media, saying they don't want anyone else hurt.

Residents of Kokiri Cres have been evacuated in their hunt for Pita Rangi Tekira, which they say is still an active situation.

They found a "location of interest" and have been working to clear a number of houses.

An officer was injured during the incident this morning after jumping from the second storey of the house to escape the gunman.

The armed offenders squad is still in the area.

Police have released a photo of Tekira, saying they want to talk to him and have called on anyone who knows him or where he is to contact police.

They've described him as Maori with short black hair and wearing a dark top and shorts. Police say he is possibly carrying a firearm.

In a news conference this afternoon, Wellington District Commander Superintendent Sam Hoyle said the situation was still active.

"We are going to be on the ground in Waitangirua until we bring him into custody."

He has a message for Tekira and those known to him.

"If he's watching this or his members of family are watching this, please ring us. We want this to end without anyone else getting hurt."

Supt Hoyle says there was another person inside the house who is now talking to police.

Police have been looking for Tekira, 29, since April 1 after he removed his electronic monitoring bracelet and left the Hawke's Bay house he was meant to be staying.

He is wanted for breaching electronic bail and is also facing 11 charges including dishonesty, driving offences and violence.

In a media release from April 7, police said Tekira had associates in Hutt Valley and Porirua and was likely to have travelled to the Wellington area from Hawke's Bay.

The public have been warned not to approach him, but instead call police on 111.

Four armed officers went to the house on Kokiri Cres around 9:45am looking for a man who was wanted for arrest. They had done a risk assessment before entering the house.

They went inside to look for him when they were confronted by Tekira who was holding a shotgun and it is believed a single shot was fired at the dog. It was at this time the officer leaped out of the window.

"The nature of police work is that there is no such thing as a routine door knock. You never know what is on the other side of the door and this is a reminder, if we all needed it, of the dangers of police work."

Supt Hoyle said police told schools in the cordon to put in place their emergency procedures.

A helicopter was sent to take the officer to Wellington Hospital.

His family are at his side and he is being supported by police staff.

Police are at the scene and a cordon has been put up at Waitangirua Community Park, at the corner of Corinna and Warspite Ave. Mobile patrols are in place.

Police have named the dog as Gazza -- the seventh to die by being shot on duty.

"Police dog teams are a close-knit family right across police, they do amazing work for us each and every day and they have a pretty amazing given they attend something in the order of 40,000 events for us each year," Supt Hoyle says.

Police have asked the public to report any suspicious activity in the area by calling 111 and to stay away from Kokiri Cres.
