A group of prison officers have been stood down after discussing an offender on Facebook.
The guards work at the maximum security Auckland Prison at Paremoremo, and the Mt Eden Corrections Facility.
They have been placed on special leave pending a full investigation.
Dennis Goodin, prison director of Mt Eden, said he became aware on Friday of several guards discussing an offender on Facebook.
"The majority of staff carry out their duties to a high standard, [and] when other staff do not, it lets everyone down".
He says all staff must abide by the department's code of conduct, and "any staff found to have fallen short will be dealt with appropriately".
Mt Eden was formerly run by private operator Serco, but is back in the hands of the government after a series of scandals, including allegations that a fight club operated at the prison.
