A Morrinsville pumpkin grower has broken his own national record for heaviest pumpkin with the 789.5kg pièce de résistance he unveiled at the Giant Pumpkin Carnival yesterday.

Tim Harris brought the colossal plant to the carnival in Hamilton Gardens and easily swept away his competitors, making it the fifth time he has taken top spot in the competition in the five years he has entered.

The plant is a whopping 35kg weightier than the then-record 754.5kg pumpkin he brought to last year's carnival -- and Mr Harris now not only holds the New Zealand pumpkin record, but the Southern Hemisphere record as well.

However, Mr Harris still has a long way to go if he wants to become the world's best ever pumpkin grower.

That is a title held by Swiss man Beni Meier, who had his 1054kg monster pumpkin authenticated by the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth in 2014.
