Car crashes into Papatoetoe shops, gas main

A person has died after a car crashed into a small line of shops, hitting the gas main, causing the car and a shop to catch fire in the south Auckland suburb of Papatoetoe.

Police were called out to the intersection of Station Rd, Portage Rd and Grey Ave just before 4:30am where a blaze erupted.

The car failed to make the bend. The body has been removed, and formal identification will take place.

Police say it is too early to know what has caused the crash.

Investigators are still at the scene and expect to be finished later today. The road will not be reopened until then.

The car was a Ford Falcon. Police ask anyone who may have seen the car in Papatoetoe between 4am and 4:30am to contact Constable Glen Carlyle on (09) 261 1300.
