Fiery campervan crash victim named

Police have released the name of the woman killed after her campervan caught fire while driving along a rural Waikato road.

Lydia Kiri, 54, from Opotiki, died after the campervan caught fire and then crashed on State Highway 24, near Matamata on Saturday afternoon.

A 72-year-old man who was also in the vehicle when the fire began remains in a serious condition in hospital.

"While it is currently unclear exactly how the fire started, motorists need to ensure not only themselves but their vehicles are fit for the road," said Inspector Frida Grace.

Police are still investigating the cause.
