A Hastings man has been charged over the death of a soldier who was shot while out hunting in the lower North Island's Ruahine Ranges earlier this year.

The 57-year-old will appear in Hastings District Court on Friday next week, charged with careless use of a firearm causing the death of Danny Jordan.

Mr Jordan, 23, was hunting with two army friends when he was shot by someone from another group on the Sparrowhawk Track on March 31.

He was a sapper in the New Zealand Defence Force and was stationed at Linton Military Camp.
