Man knocked unconscious in Nelson assault

Police are seeking witnesses to an assault on a Nelson man early on Sunday morning.

Around 3:30am on Sunday a man was walking home alone through the Nelson CBD. Police say he was confronted at the corner of Bridge St and Rutherford St by a group of six to 10 people, both male and female, who were walking in the opposite direction.

"He was set upon by the group in a prolonged assault where he was knocked unconscious," Detective Sergeant Alex Brunning says.

"During the assault he received a fractured upper left cheek bone and has been flown to Wellington Hospital for corrective surgery."
