Man named after fatal tanker crash in Tasman district

A bee sting may have contributed to a fatal crash where a milk tanker went off the road in the Tasman District, police say.

Police named 47-year-old Eric Heath from Timaru as the driver of a tanker who died on Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they're still investigating what caused the truck to leave the road but Senior Sergeant Blair Hall said Mr Heath appeared to have been stung by a bee before the accident.

The serious crash unit is still investigating the incident which occurred around 2:50pm, and closed SH6 at Glenhope, Tasman district for nine hours.

Police say the truck left the road and ploughed into scrub.

The wreck was finally removed around 10:50pm on Tuesday night and the road was then opened just before midnight.
