Navy commander's retrial on indecent assault begins

  • 16/05/2016

A Royal New Zealand Navy commander is facing a retrial this morning accused of groping the backside of a subordinate.

In March, after nearly five hours of deliberation, the panel of three senior officers could not agree on whether a charge of indecent assault had been proven.

A female lieutenant claims a commander, whom she had known for more than a decade, grabbed her buttocks up to five times over the course of the evening of May 17, 2012.

He was subsequently charged with indecent assault and both parties were granted name suppression.

The court martial, being held at the Devonport Naval base, is set down for three days.
