Police are still trying to figure out what happened to a woman found seriously injured on the roadside north of Auckland this morning and exactly who she is.

The victim was found by a member of the public who was driving past on Waiwhiu Conical Peak Rd in Dome Valley around 7am.

The woman is suffering from "serious life-threatening head injuries", and police believe there is "foul play involved".

She was flown to Auckland Hospital, and will undergo surgery this afternoon.

The scene at Dome Valley is being examined by police.

Police are asking for help to identify the woman, as she is unable to speak to police.

"We don't know her name. She's someone daughter. We're appealing to the public now. We're hoping someone can help identify her," says Rodney Area Commander Inspector Mark Fergus.

They describe her as Caucasian, aged between 20 and 30 years old with short brown hair and a medium build. She has a tattoo on the back of her lower left leg.
