Two people have been taken to hospital after a serious crash in Edendale, near Invercargill.

The crash happened on Ferry Rd when a milk tanker collided with another truck. A crane has been brought in to clear the milk tanker.

St John was alerted at 9:54am and sent two ambulances and a rapid response team. An Otago rescue helicopter was also sent.

A man in his 40s was flown to Dunedin Hospital with moderate injuries. One other was taken to Southland Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police say the driver of the milk tanker had to be cut out of his cab.
