The neighbour of a convicted rapist is outraged she wasn't told by Corrections he was moving into the property over her back fence.

The man was released from prison last month and is being housed in Mangere, around 300 metres from Jean Batten Primary School.

The neighbour, whom Newshub has chosen not to name, has three children and says the first time she found out he'd be moving in was when she got a newsletter from their school.

"They did not notify us at all -- my house is directly at the back of that house."

She no longer lets her children play outside the back of their house and has even moved their trampoline to the front.

She says none of her neighbours knew anything about his arrival, including a home a few doors down where five children live.

"There are always scenarios playing in my head. What am I going to do for my children? How am I going to protect them? I am a single mother and it is quite scary, especially knowing I can't even sit inside while my kids go out the back of their own property."

In a statement to Newshub on Saturday morning, Department of Corrections northern operations director Lynette Cave said staff and police "met with five local school principals, in addition to neighbours of the property, to advise them that an offender will be residing in their community".

A spokesperson subsequently said they were aware of the neighbour's concerns and would visit her next week.

"We had attempted to contact her on Friday to set up a time to meet, however the call was not returned.

"We are always willing to meet with members of the public who have questions about the management of offenders in the community."

The offender has temporary name suppression and was initially housed near Te Kura Maori o Nga Tapuwae in Mangere East when he was released from prison in May.

Members of the community condemned the lack of communication surrounding the housing, and pupils at the school alleged they filmed the man making hand and tongue gestures at them.

This led to him being moved to the neighbourhood near Jean Batten Primary School.

Corrections said the offender will be subject to ongoing assessment to identify any likelihood of further offending.
