A man has died following a head-on crash in the Wairarapa, bringing the Queen's Birthday weekend holiday toll to five.
The crash happened on State Highway 2, near Mt Bruce, just before midday today.
The man, the driver of one of the vehicles, was cut from his vehicle but died shortly after emergency services began CPR on him, police say.
Four others involved suffered minor to serious injuries and were flown to hospital.
A woman in her 30s and her baby were flown to Palmerston North Hospital, while the others were taken to Wellington Hospital via helicopter and ambulance, the Philips Search and Rescue Trust says.
SH2 remained closed this afternoon with local diversions in place.
Five people have now died on the country's road during the long weekend, matching last year's toll.
The official holiday road toll period started at 4pm on Friday and runs until 6am on Tuesday.
