Two people were taken to hospital following an early morning house fire which threatened neighbouring properties in Lower Hutt.

Hutt Valley fire crews were called to the Major Drive home around 1:30am on Friday, and found the house completely on fire.

"Crews attacked it from two sides to make sure they protected neighbouring properties," senior station officer Craig Gold says.

There was no damage to other properties.

One man is still in Hutt Hospital's ICU in a stable condition, while a woman has since been discharged, a Hutt Valley DHB spokesperson says.

Mr Gold says it is unclear what alerted the occupants to the fire, but said it was a timely reminder to check fire alarms are working.
