Pair plead not guilty over baby drowning

The father and grandfather of a one-year-old who drowned in a temporary pool at Christmas have pleaded not guilty to manslaughter.

Imogen Saleupolu-Mataafi died in the pool set up at her family's home in Manurewa on Christmas Day, 2014.

Her father James Mataafi and grandfather Mosala Saleupolu appeared in the High Court at Auckland today, where they both pleaded not guilty.

Both the Crown and defence agreed it was a tragic case, where the defendants were in-part victims themselves.

The pair have been remanded on bail to appear again in August.

A trial has been set down for May 2017.
