Snow business like mountain biking on ice

If careering down an icy slope on a mountain bike at 60 or 70 miles an hour sounds absolutely terrifying, you might be right.

Snow mountain biking is one of the events that took place at the weekend as part of Queenstown's annual Winter Festival.

Participants race down a snowy obstacle course on the Remarkables ski field and the views may be stunning, but all that rock, ice and snow is pretty nerve-wracking.

If you're after something a bit more sedate, there's also the option of ice skating, watching street performers or getting your pup involved in a spot of competitive dog barking.

The Queenstown Winter Festival started on June 24 and runs until July 3.
