A police chase in Whangarei ended in a crash on Sunday night when the fleeing vehicle turned and hit a pursuing police car.
The driver of the fleeing car is in critical condition after being thrown from the vehicle.
Two officers got minor injuries in the crash on Otaika Rd -- part of SH1.
The 8-minute chase began when the car was seen speeding. Two police cars tried to stop the fleeing vehicle. They were preparing to use road spikes, police say.
The incident is being reviewed by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
