Alpine challenge child's play for young competitors

A team of children are taking on one of New Zealand's top multisport events.

Competitors in Queenstown's Peak to Peak have to ski, bike, run and kayak from the top of one snowy mountain to another.

In October, Harper Souness, Gigi Thomson, Zoe Bennetts, Todd Vermeir, Phoebe O'Donnell and Samuel Muir will be taking on the challenge.

Charlotte, who's 10, says she'd be nervous if she was competiting against other kids, but adults are okay.

Harper, also 10, will be taking on steep, icy roads with the 14 kilometre bike race.

Event organiser Geoff Hunt says it's not only unusual to see children competiting in the event - it's actually against the rules.

"We made an exception because this group of parents got their kids organised. They have a parent with every kid on every single stage and that met our safety requirements."

Julian Lee met the team taking on the equivalent of a snowy Ironman.
