Bomb threat at Queenstown Airport

  • 24/07/2016

Queenstown Airport has been reopened after a search for explosives came up with nothing.

Earlier on Sunday afternoon, the airport's terminal was evacuated and emergency services flooded the scene following a bomb scare.

Police confirmed that a cleaner found a note onboard a Qantas plane after it arrived in the tourist destination from Australia just before 3pm (NZT). The note contained a bomb threat.

However no explosives were found during a search of the plane undertaken by police and aviation security.

Police have now released a statement saying "nothing of interest" was found in a search of the terminal or passengers' baggage either.

They urge people to be patient, with delays expected as access to the terminal is restored. They are continuing to investigate the threat.

The plane had no passengers aboard when the message was discovered, and the airport terminal had been sealed off by police as they carried out their investigations.

Flights are likely to be affected by the evacuation.
