Fairlie fabulous gourmet pies prove popular

A roast lamb packed inside pastry and pork belly topped with crackling are just some of the famous pies that are putting Fairlie on the map.

It's got locals talking and tourists travelling from afar for a bite. Some even say they're the best pies in the country.

NZ is not alone in its pie obsession

The small bakehouse is selling double the number of pies per day than the township's entire population - 1300 pies are made each day on-site.

Franz Lieber has been the owner of the bakehouse for 30 years. His business is becoming so big lines queue out the door and he's had to shift into a temporary bakery while he expands the famous stop.

"They just come straight out of the oven and straight into the pie warmer and that's the key. 'Fresh is best', that's always my motto," he says.

The refurbished bakehouse will be able to seat 95.
